The bear was bled and cleaned. Fires were set on the shores of Lake Tolvajärvi and dozens of mess tins were filled with dark meat to which some fresh spring water was added and a pinch of salt for seasoning. After a couple of hours the hungry men began to eat the unexpected delicacy with great enthusiasm. Alarm bells started ringing. The peace of the meal had been disturbed. The mess tins and the meat in them were left, as the men were caught by surprise. In the evening, however, calm was restored to the shores of the lake. The fires had been obliterated by tanks and the mess tins and the meat were no longer fit for use. A veteran recalls, "I have never tasted such tender and tasty meat. No dessert was needed. The worst thing was that there were ten men missing the next time we ate."
